Mandate & statutory basis

The Competition Bureau operates under the Competition Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-34, whose purpose clause (s.1.1) is "to maintain and encourage competition in Canada in order to promote the efficiency and adaptability of the Canadian economy," while expanding opportunities in world markets, ensuring small and medium enterprises an equitable opportunity to participate, and giving consumers competitive prices and product choices (https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-34/page-1.html, fetched this review). Section 7(1) of the Act establishes the position of Commissioner of Competition, appointed by the Governor in Council, responsible for administering and enforcing the Act (same source).
