Institutional history

The Collection traces its founding to 1952, when its namesake founders purchased an initial ten acres of land in Kleinburg, Ontario, and began assembling a private art collection that grew to 194 works by 1965 (https://mcmichael.com/mcmichael-history/). In 1965 the founders donated their collection, home and land to the Province of Ontario, and the gallery opened to the public on July 8, 1966 under the name "McMichael Conservation Collection of Art" (same source).
