Mandate & statutory basis

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is "a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations" arising from interactions between police and civilians (https://www.siu.on.ca/en/what_we_do.php, fetched this review). Its mandate is "to nurture confidence in Ontario's police services and select special constables and peace officers by assuring the public that the actions of these officials resulting in serious injury, death, the discharge of a firearm at a person or an allegation of sexual assault are subjected to rigorous, independent investigations" (https://www.siu.on.ca/en/civilian_oversight.php, fetched this review). Institutional history
