Every figure in this book is meant to be checked, not taken on faith. The research draws exclusively on public primary sources — municipal budgets and Council items, Auditor General and Ombudsman reports, provincial and federal program data, court decisions, and peer-reviewed studies — rather than secondhand retellings of them.

Each claim is tracked in a claims ledger recording, for every figure and quotation used, its source, the date it was published or accessed, and the exact supporting text, so a reader can trace any number back to where it came from. That ledger went through an independent verification pass, re-checking claims against their cited sources, and a separate adversarial review that argued against this book's own conclusions as hard as any outside critic would — folded directly into Chapter 9 rather than filed away. Where a figure could not be confirmed, this book says so in the text itself, using a consistent "not yet independently verified" flag, instead of smoothing over the gap.

Corrections log

This book corrects itself in the open. Every published correction to this edition, dated:

2026-08-07 (first publication day): the Executive Summary's Indigenous-overrepresentation line was aligned with this book's own verified record — overrepresentation in every count since the first in 2006, three- to sixteen-fold depending on the measure, replacing an earlier "three- to ten-fold in every count ever taken" phrasing; the Indigenous-delivery line was corrected from "nine other" organizations to the verified "at least seven, with an eighth in development"; Chapter 3's rent comparison was corrected from "$1,830 a year earlier" (an October 2023 figure mislabeled) to the correct October 2024 figure, $1,852.

2026-08-08 (full chapter-tier verification burn): roughly twenty-five further corrections, each traceable in this book's public receipt rows — three "not yet independently verified" flags resolved with verified facts (the Heegsma appeal, heard February 10–11, 2026 and under reserve; the community mental-health staffing figures, correctly attributed to the Canadian Mental Health Association's Ontario division; the Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit's actual portable, formula-based mechanism); a critic's Denver mortality citation checked against its own underlying trial and found unsupported, stated in the text; comparator precision on Finland, Glasgow, and England; the nightly shelter-cost figures re-attributed to their true sources (the $136 base-shelter figure to the Auditor General's February 2025 audit, Figure 3; the hotel and purpose-built figures to City budget materials and press reporting); the National Housing Strategy's output updated to its own 455,113-unit figure; a federal extension of the encampment-initiative funding noted; and honesty flags added where re-verification could not re-locate a circulated figure rather than silently keeping it.
