The Orientation Table — a campus kit

One table, one week, one project your club actually runs. This is the table sheet, the thirty-second door script, the share text, and the menu of projects a club can adopt. Nothing else.

Kids welcome. Food shared. Nobody pays. (This kit’s whole family of gatherings runs on that rule — no cost to run any of it, food or not, whatever your campus allows.)

A note to the club exec

This is your club, your table, your name on everything. Nothing behind this kit shows up to run your event, joins your club, collects your members’ names, or asks your student union to approve anything. Take what’s below, change whatever doesn’t fit your campus, and run it during orientation week if you can — it’s built to be ready the week you print it.

Your campus has its own rules for tabling, postering, and outside materials. Follow them; this page asks nothing of your institution beyond its own process. Where your union requires a club to declare an external affiliation — you have none. This is a free open kit. You are not affiliating with anyone by printing it.

The one thing worth knowing before you decide: every conversation your club runs this fall joins a citywide count — a record of what Toronto’s students said they want the city to become, counted in aggregate, alongside every other club, classroom, block circle and dinner table running the same harvest. Your club’s room becomes primary-source civic material. That is the whole offer.

The thirty-second door script — orientation week

This is the raw, spoken register — written to be said, not handed over. Say it in your own words; these are the beats. Softer registers are legitimate too — the beats are what carries, not the profanity.

Say it to one person, not to a crowd:

There are no more jobs — not the way you were promised. And you’ve been told bullshit your whole life about how this works.

But there is more real work to be done than there has ever been, and it is your future being built right now, by people who aren’t asking you.

So: stop scrolling. Stop pretending the degree alone is teaching you what you need. Start organizing. Direct your own learning — you have the best ideas in the world in your pocket if you go get them.

Then let’s demand the adults and the rich sit down with us and talk about the future we all want, and how we get there.

Never say: “leaders of tomorrow.” They are operators of today.

Here is the honest version: the world is broken, we are all professionals at describing it, and nobody is coming. Global unity sounds impossible — but building and strengthening our own neighbourhoods is easy. The answer has never been left or right. The answer is down, then up.

Toronto already holds all the money, permission, ideas, tools and talent it needs to decide the future it wants. What’s missing is the conversation, and the conversation is missing you.

What a club can do this term: pick one project from the menu overleaf. Run it in your club’s name, on your campus, on your schedule. When it’s done, the room’s ideas go into the citywide record — as a count and a set of lines, never a roster, never a name.

What we will never ask you for: your members’ names, your mailing list, your union’s endorsement, your money, or your permission to speak for you.

The club-adoption menu — one project per club

One club, one project, one term. Pick the row that already looks like what your club does — the point is not to become a civics club, it’s to add one civic beat to the thing you already run.

The six citywide quests, if your club wants a scoreboard instead of a room: Happiest · Healthiest · Safest · Cleanest · Friendliest · Most Beautiful. Six scoreboards, all public, all counted in aggregate. Adopt one; score it in your club’s name.

The harvest — what leaves the room

Every kit ends the same way. Each person, one line each:

• VISION — “Toronto in 2030 should ___”
• COMPLAINT — “What’s broken?” (cross-streets optional)
• NOMINATION — a neighbourhood superhero: someone doing more than anyone notices

If the online form isn’t live yet, the paper is the record — nothing is lost.

Only the aggregate ever travels: how many people were in the room, how many lines collected. Not names, not who said what, not a roster, not an attendance list. Your club’s membership list is yours and is never asked for.

One club room of ten people = one conversation in the citywide count.

Translate this kit

A one-page translation is itself a civic act. Priority languages, per the multilingual program (pending census confirmation): Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Urdu, Tagalog, Spanish, Tamil, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Farsi, Bengali. A club that runs its conversation entirely in its members’ home language is first-class, not a fallback — a bilingual room is worth more, not less. Accessibility

Print at any size your campus printer supports; the sheet is type-first, black on white, and survives a bad photocopier. Read it aloud where reading it is a barrier — the door script exists because the spoken version is the real one. Any room you run should name its own access facts honestly (stairs, washrooms, quiet space) in your own invitation; this kit does not know your building.
