Current state

The ravine system: scale, ownership, and value

Toronto's ravine system stretches more than 300 kilometres and covers 11,000 hectares — 17 percent of the city's land area. More than half is publicly owned parkland; the remainder is held by public institutions and private property owners, including about 30,000 private addresses. Ravines contain 87 percent of the city's Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) and provide an estimated $822 million each year in ecological and recreational benefits. Governance

Capital investment and Priority Investment Areas

The 2020 Ravine Strategy Implementation Report identified an estimated $104.9 million capital investment need across the first ten Priority Investment Areas (PIAs). Since then, 16 capital projects have been completed (wetland restoration, multi-use trail upgrades, wayfinding), totalling $12.3 million ($10 million in federal and provincial grants, $2.3 million from the City). Through annual budget submissions, cross-divisional coordination, and external funding, the outstanding PIA capital need has been reduced to $50.2 million in the 2026-2035 Capital Budget and Plan. Ecological restoration since 2020

Since 2020, the Ravine Strategy has achieved: 3,760 hectares of land restored (including invasive-species management), 521 tonnes of garbage and metal removed from 681 hectares of ravine land, 181 students engaged through employment/training programs, 265 Ravine Days events, and more than 20,000 participants in City and partner events [City of Toronto, February 10, 2026].

Toronto Nature Stewards and community-led restoration

The Community-led Restoration Program, piloted with Toronto Nature Stewards (TNS) since 2021 (TNS is hosted by the University of Toronto's Institute of Forestry & Conservation, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design), recruited and trained over 2,000 volunteers in 2025 to steward 47 sites (52 planned for 2026) covering over 120 hectares of natural-area parkland, including monitoring and managing more than 35 invasive plant species. This February 2026 report recommends permanent implementation of the Community-led Restoration Program, moving it beyond pilot status [City of Toronto, February 10, 2026].

A related joint project, "Project Buckthorn" (Urban Forestry, the national charity Don't Mess with the Don, and Toronto Nature Stewards), targets common buckthorn removal in Sunnybrook Park (Ward 15) [same source].

The InTO the Ravines program (with Park People, launched 2020) has received $0.545 million in City investment over five years, matched and exceeded by Park People fundraising for a total of $1.09 million; in 2025 it supported over 50 events and engaged over 1,200 participants, about one quarter of whom were first-time ravine visitors [same source]. Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs)

Toronto has 89 Environmentally Significant Areas, identified through scientific study and mapped on the Official Plan's Map 12A. 67 are under City management; the remaining 22 are managed by TRCA, the Toronto Zoo, or are privately owned. Emerald ash borer

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been present in Toronto since 2007 and has killed more than 800,000 ash trees in the city. Ravine-edge development pressure: the Glen Stewart Ravine case

A concrete, named instance of the "development vs. nature" tension the master briefing raises abstractly: real estate developer Gabriele Homes Ltd. proposed an 11-storey, 99-unit mixed-use residential building at 847-855 Kingston Road, adjacent to the north end of Glen Stewart Ravine, an Environmentally Significant Area in the Beaches neighbourhood. The original application (a 7-storey building) was filed in August 2015; a revised 11-storey proposal was submitted in December 2022 after the developer acquired the adjacent property. Community opposition centred on the Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine (a 1,200+ member Facebook group), which raised the inadequate setback, tree removal, and habitat impacts on "Special Concern" species including the Eastern Wood-Pewee and bat maternity colonies.
